The development of a new type of container shipping vessel, could change the fortunes of the Port of Portland, in Maine. The new proposed vessel will be more versatile than barges, and could lead the way to increasing shipping container traffic, in the State’s largest port.
“One thing that is going to make it easier to develop service to ports like Portland is a more efficient ship design that can be built in local yards at a low cost to make short sea shipping more economical.” – U.S. Rep., D-Maine.
Preliminary estimates put the investment into building these new vessels, with the capacity to transport 450 TEUs of cargo between shipping ports, at between $30-$50 million. The current cost for ships utilized for this same purpose, generally cost around $70 million-$125 million, and thus would represent a significant cost saving; making the service much more efficient.
